Brief~Rainforest
Investigation~ The Rainforest
Investigation
~ The Rainforest
Watty
W Weasel has found some interesting web sites about the rainforest in
St Lucia and further general information. In particular he has found descriptions
from Maria Grech about her visit to the rainforest. It is very vivid and
full of wonderful descriptions but quite long so it might be an idea to
deal with it in sections and share them out in your group.
Clicking
on the icons will take you straight to the web sites. If there is more
than one, click on the hyperlink in orange writing.

Map the route to the Rainforest
An ideal start would be the whole class activity
which is on your Teacher's
Page. You read a detailed description to mark a map
route from Anse La Raye to the rainforest in St Lucia. Ask your
teacher to check it out. Or, you can try it with your group. Click
on the Parrot Icon to see details.

Make a poster about the Rainforest
Create a dance about the destruction
of the forest
Open the page called The Virgin Land.
You will need to copy
and paste it. Highlight
all the things that have helped to destroy the rainforest.
Don’t forget paragraph 7.
Using this information:-
a) As suggested on the web site, design a poster illustrating
the slogan "Wherever you go - take nothing but photographs,
leave nothing but footsteps, kill nothing but time." Show
all the things which have destroyed the rainforest in the past.
b) Create a dance which shows the destructive actions of the past
gradually destroying all the positive things e.g. tall trees,
huge tree ferns, vines, and the various inhabitants.

Prepare a leaflet "St Lucian Parrot
and other creatures of the forest"
Open the two pages The Tall Trees
and Parrots and Herons and research some of the
living plants and animals mentioned. In particular find out about
the rare St Lucian parrot, the Jacquot.
All three of these sites will give you much the
same text but a variety of photos.
Find out what caused it to become endangered
by reading the site below. You will need to scroll down to 'Island
Star' and read the first six or seven paragraphs. Copy
and paste this text onto a word processing page the highlight
reasons why its numbers disappeared and how they resolved the
problem.

of some pages you can see a link to a Google search.
You could choose a few of these to investigate.
If there is not a Google search link on the page then make your
own search.
Enter the name enclosed in quotation marks. e.g. "Sooty tern".
Make sure an adult is with you when you are searching. you can

page to click on the first mouse image 'to see if you can work out
some of the characteristics of the different layers of the rainforest
by dragging the boxes to the right places.'
You cannot print straight from this page but you could use the
Print
Screen key on your keyboard.
