Children are very careful to use their exercise books sensibly.
Why do you think this is?
|
The children learn about their country
and where it is in the world.
The teachers draw maps for them because
they do not have many books
other than their text books
These pictures come from the Methodist
Lower Basic School in Janjanbureh.
It is an older building than at Boraba because it is in a town
so has had a school for longer.
The Methodist Church was responsible for building it
but most of the teachers and children are Muslims.

Much of the teaching is from the blackboard.
Schools do not have many books, usually topic books like these.
The teachers and children
have set books for each subject.
The topics covered are often very practical
and relate to how to live well and sensibly in The Gambia.
In Science
their books might teach about
disease-carrying
insects
common diseases
and how to prevent them e.g keeping the compound clean
how to recognise
and use medicinal plants growing around them
conservation farming
conservation of
wildlife
soil erosion
