How is the timetable the same as yours? How is it different?

SES is Social and Environmental Studies

IRK means Islamic Religious Knowledge.
Most children are Muslims, that is people who follow the Islamic Religion.
This picture shows them praying during the school day. You can find out more about Islam here.

Children are very careful to use their exercise books sensibly.

Why do you think this is?

The children learn about their country and where it is in the world.

The teachers draw maps for them because they do not have many books
other than their text books

These pictures come from the Methodist Lower Basic School in Janjanbureh.
It is an older building than at Boraba because it is in a town
so has had a school for longer.
The Methodist Church was responsible for building it
but most of the teachers and children are Muslims.

Much of the teaching is from the blackboard.
Schools do not have many books, usually topic books like these.

The teachers and children have set books for each subject.
The topics covered are often very practical
and relate to how to live well and sensibly in The Gambia.

In Science their books might teach about

  • disease-carrying insects

  • common diseases and how to prevent them e.g keeping the compound clean

  • how to recognise and use medicinal plants growing around them

  • conservation farming

  • conservation of wildlife

  • soil erosion

  • In Social and Environmental Studies(SES) at Grade 5 topics are

    • Looking at our country
    • The peoples of the Gambia
    • Our Nation
    • Banjul, our capital city
    • Developing The Gambia: How can we help?
    • Developing The Gambia: Improving our lives
    • Women of The Gambia
    • Our sport and culture
