The River Gambia
The land is so flat in The Gambia that the tide can carry
salt water from the sea well over 100 miles up river.
This makes it a very special environment.
Mangroves grow well and they provide good firewood.
Oysters are plentiful and attach themselves to the roots
of the mangroves providing food.
The empty shells are ground down
and mixed with tarmac for roads.
They also produce a paint used for whitewash.
This very special environment means that there is a huge
variety of birds found in the country and it attracts tourists
especially to see them.

These are photos
taken when the visitors went on a river trip.
It was in February which is the dry season.
If they went at the end of the rainy season
there would be a lot more grass and leaves around

Sometimes you see this shady creature! |
Here's a white croc! |
Some local people use the river to travel around |
These are photos taken in and around
Janjanbureh and across to the south bank of the river
This special environment is also very
fragile
and at the moment is not damaged by too many tourist boats.
Is tourism always a good thing?
