Transport

You see many forms of transport

A scene frome the famous arch by Steve Rice

Some buildings have water from taps and a toilet. There might not be water all the time. There was no water in this cistern. It was flushed with water from the small jug.

The south road covered in red Saharan sand

Further away they are covered in red Sahara sand and in 2005 there were many potholes on the south road. It is now being repaired. There is only one road south and one north of the River Gambia once you travel inland.

Development of north road

The north road had no tarmac but by 2008 it was possible to travel fast on it as the tarmaccing was finished. This is when they were still working on it. It was very dusty to travel through!

Donkey cart besides a lorry on a busy road

Lorries, cars, bikes and donkeys are all seen in towns and villages. Around the coast, roads are very busy but when travelling on the north or south roads it can be very quiet.

Loading on to the Banjul ferry

There are no bridges anywhere in the country crossing the river from the north to the south bank. The north road is now the fastest road but you reach it by crossing on this ferry. You may have to wait a few hours to board it.

There is a ferry north and south of Janjanbureh

To get from the north to the south side of the River Gambia there are several ferries. Janjanbureh is on an island so there are two ferries for cars and passengers reaching the north and south road.
