School

Children do not have to go to school in The Gambia
but parents are very keen that they should.
Find out what you can about them.

Children gather together at Boraba Lower Basic School

Here is Boraba Lower Basic School.

There is a Nursery at school built a few years ago.
There is also a private nursery about 40 minutes donkey ride away
at a Fula village called Korrop.
Children might stay at this nursery until after they reach school age
to save them walking so far.
The classes go from Nursery, then Grade 1 to Grade 6. The children might start school at any age so there are different ages in each Grade.
They may leave to go to the Upper Basic School at Janjanbureh at 11
or they may still be at this school until 15.

Children come to this school speaking Mandinka or Fula.
At some schools children will speak other tribal languages too.
Often they cannot understand each other.

All children are taught in English
