Religion

A mosque

As you travel around in The Gambia you see mosques in every town and many villages because it is a Muslim country. The religion is Islam, introduced by the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This is always said or written after his name

The mosque in the village of Sare Ngai

The call to prayer is heard early every morning. It comes from the minaret, the tall tower, and is called by the muezzin five times each day. Muslims can pray anywhere and do not have to go to the mosques to pray

Muslim schoolchildren praying

Children stop to pray at school. Many prayers are set and involve standing and kneeling in many positions. Males and females pray separately.

Some Gambians are Christians and worship in church. Both religions will recognise and accept each others and often share in each others celebrations and festivals.
