Some basic facts

  • The Gambia is the smallest country in Africa
  • It is on the West Coast, north of the Equator and
    south of the Sahara Desert
  • Its borders mainly follow the course of the River
    Gambia which gives the country its name
  • It is surrounded by the country, Senegal
  • Its coastline is on the North Atlantic Ocean
  • Capital : Banjul
  • It extends eastwards about 320km (200 miles
  • Its width varies between 20 and 50 km (30 miles) but up to 50 miles at the coast
  • The Gambians are known for their happiness and so
    the coast is known as 'The Smiling Coast'
  • Their favourite phrase is 'No problem!
