Ferries

There are no bridges over the River Gambia from north to south
so any crossings have to be made by boat.

Pictures 1 &3 by kind permission of Nick and Sally Kendall
Two transport ferries run on the estuary of the Gambia
They are very crowded with vehicles, people and animals. Lorries may queue for days

Another way to cross is on pirogues, long narrow wooden boats.

Can you find out more about pirogues from Watty?

These are pictures of the ferries around Janjanbureh. Some carry vehicles, others just people and bikes!
There will be ferries at other crossing places along the river.
